Z-11 is multi-purpose light helicopter, the first one that Chinese manufacturer owns the intellectual property. Its R&D started in 1989 by China Helicopter R&D Institute and Changhe Aviation. It performed first flight on 22 December 1994, passed technology appraisement on 26 December 1996, passed design frozen in December 2000, received type certificate and production certificate issued by CAAC in April 2001 and December 2002 respectively and was awarded the Second Prize in National Technology Improvement in 2004.
Z-11 is designed with the conventional main rotor system as well as tail rotor, a light utility helicopter of two-ton class. It is equipped with one WZ8D turbo-shaft engine manufactured by South Aeroengine Company. The main rotor is composed of a Starflex rotor, and 3 composite-material blades. The rail rotor has 2 seesaw composite-material blades. The fuselage structures are made of aluminum composite material, and the landing gear is of fixed skid type with damper. The aircraft cockpit is equipped with dual pilot control panels paratactically, with access doors on both sides. The driven system comprises main reducer, tail reducer, rotor shaft, power transmission shaft, and tail transmission shaft. The stability augmentation devices installed improve the maneuverability and stability of the helicopter.
Z-11 has the maximum take-off weight of 2200 kg, maximum load of 577 kg, utmost speed of 278 km/h, maximum voyage of 560 km, endurance of 3 hours and 42 minutes, and service ceiling of 5240 meters. Z-11 is basically used for training pilot. After reconfiguration, it could be applied for prospecting, forest protection, examining and repairing high-voltage electrical wire, fertilizing, exterminating pests, public security and traffic control.
Z-11 has been delivered to customers since 1998 and trained a number of pilots. It participated in flight performances in Hong Kong Airshow, Zhuhai Airshow and Nanjing Firefighting Special Instrument Show.
